Library Renovation Project

New library coming in 2022!

Coming Soon...

The Rice building is under construction and will remain closed until April of 2022.

Visit the building project website for more information and progress photos!

While We're Under Construction:

All library operations are now housed in the Taylor building at 2 Walker St.

Audiobooks, periodicals, YA fiction and graphic novels, and a small number of nonfiction books are now available in the Taylor building. Minerva interlibrary loan is available for any title that has been moved into storage.

Now that we are in the Taylor building, space is at a premium.

  • The book sale is currently suspended, and we cannot accept any book donations inside the library.
  • There are no private meeting rooms or study space available.
  • All in-person programming has been suspended, but be sure to check our Events page for virtual programs!

What will happen to the Taylor building?

We will move out of the Taylor building for good when construction on Rice is completed next year. Taylor will be sold to a private entity and redeveloped after we move.

What about parking?

28 new parking spaces will be added to the Rice campus. Maine Department of Transportation is also working to expand short-term street parking on Wentworth St. (Route 103) next year.

Are there any other meeting or quiet study spaces in town?

The Kittery Community Center offers some facility rentals for meetings. You can also try other area libraries.

Are you changing anything about the original Rice building?

Preserving the historic importance of the Rice building was an absolute priority throughout the project. The updated Rice building will meet the standards of both the Americans with Disabilities Act and the National Register of Historic Places.

The grand staircase, woodwork, fireplaces, and stained glass will still be there, along with updates such as an elevator and more emergency exits. The original exterior brick and windows will also still be visible from inside the addition once finished.

We're also excited to expand access to other parts of the building! The Maine Room and circulation office (more commonly called the turret rooms) will be converted into public space. The Alma Roberts room (the main space on the second floor) will also still be used as event space.
