6:00 PMFun & Frothy Book Club: THE WILDER LIFE

Location:
Contact:
Description:

Have you ever loved a story  so much you wanted to climb through the pages or the screen and lose yourself in its world? Have you ever dressed up as your favorite character, attended a convention, or connected with your fandom online?

This month's book club celebrates the weird, wonderful, all-consuming love some of us still have for our childhood favorites. We will be reading The Wilder Life, a memoir about Wendy McClure's quest to find herself in the real-life world of Laura Ingalls Wilder and her devotees.

"The Wilder Life is a loving, irreverent, spirited tribute to a series of books that have inspired generations of American women. It is also an incredibly funny first-person account of obsessive reading, and a story about what happens when we reconnect with our childhood touchstones-and find that our old love has only deepened."

(Prairie dresses optional.)

Join Anne Romney for a 3-part discussion on Debbie Irving’s book Waking Up White, and Finding Myself in the Story of Race.
Anne would like participants to commit to the 3 Saturdays for a well-rounded discussion.
To register, please contact Greta Evans at 439-1553 x5.

For twenty-five years, Debby Irving sensed inexplicable racial tensions in her personal and professional relationships. As a colleague and neighbor, she worried about offending people she dearly wanted to befriend. As an arts administrator, she didn't understand why her diversity efforts lacked traction. As a teacher, she found her best efforts to reach out to students and families of color left her wondering what she was missing. Then, in 2009, one "aha!" moment launched an adventure of discovery and insight that drastically shifted her worldview and upended her life plan. In Waking Up White, Irving tells her often cringe-worthy story with such openness that readers will turn every page rooting for her-and ultimately for all of us.
